Get creative with Kaltura

NIU’S video platform, Kaltura, is teeming with activity, but you might be surprised to learn what else you can do with your video content. In addition to recording and uploading lectures, you can choose from a variety of Kaltura tools to help boost your video engagement.

Video Sharing

Did you know you can share your video content with individuals outside of NIU? To begin, log in to the MediaSpace portal with your Blackboard login credentials. Next, follow our Kaltura sharing instructions to change the permission settings on your video. After you have saved your changes, Kaltura will generate a shareable link. Anyone who has the link will now have viewing privileges for your video.

Interactive Video Quiz

You can also take your recorded lecture to the next level by converting the recording into an interactive video quiz. As students progress through the recording, the video will pause so they can answer a quiz question. Once a student submits an answer, the recording will resume playing until the next question populates. Instructors can insert hints, allow multiple attempts, prevent fast-forwarding, and they can decide if they would like to embed the video quiz in their Blackboard course as a graded or ungraded exercise. To learn more about the interactive video quiz feature, be sure to visit our Kaltura support page or check our workshop schedule for an upcoming Kaltura quiz workshop.

Student Videos

Don’t forget that Kaltura is a video platform that can be accessed by staff, students, and faculty. In addition to creating your own video recordings, you can ask students to submit their own Kaltura recordings as part of an assessment. Instructors can require students to submit videos as Blackboard Assignments, or students can share videos in a Blackboard Discussion Board so their peers can view and comment on the recordings. For more information on how students can share their videos, please visit our Kaltura student support page.

Mobile App

Finally, if you are looking for something a little more dynamic than a standard webcam recording, consider switching to your cell phone. Kaltura’s free mobile application, Kaltura MediaSpace Go (KMSGo), offers a creative recording solution for when you’re on the move. Android and iPhone users can create field videos that will directly upload to their Kaltura Media Gallery account. Once uploaded to their Kaltura Media Gallery, users can enjoy all of their favorite Kaltura features, including auto captioning, editing functions, sharing capabilities, and more.
