New affordable textbook search and filter in MyNIU

Do you teach a course with zero-cost or low-cost course materials? Beginning with the Fall 2022 course schedule, students will be able to search for and filter courses with affordable course materials (i.e., required books, textbooks, eBooks, streaming video, CDs, or DVDs) at the time of registration. (Note that course equipment and supplies are not included in the $40 or less designation.)

The Course Materials Affordability Task Force has recommended and Registration and Records has created two new Course Attribute values: one for courses with low-cost textbooks (total course materials cost of $40 or less) and the other for courses with no textbook costs.

Beginning with the Fall 2022 course schedule, department schedulers will be able to add these attribute values to any courses in MyNIU that meet the criteria for low or zero-cost textbook courses.

To ensure that the courses you teach with free or low-cost course materials are identified for students in MyNIU, please notify your department course scheduler and department chair to let them know which of your Fall 2022 courses should be designated as either low-cost or zero-cost. (Course schedulers and department chairs will receive separate communications from Registration and Records on the technical specifics.) Keep in mind that if your course requires access to online content with an additional fee, it should not be designated as low-cost if that fee would put the total cost of course materials over $40.

Special thanks to the Course Materials Affordability Task Force for their advocacy and benchmarking with other institutions and to Registrar Cody Schmitz and his team in Registration and Records for making this new functionality possible in MyNIU!
