Fall semester welcome for teaching assistants from Dean Wilks

Greetings, Fall GAs,

With the start of the fall semester just a week away, I am writing to provide you with important requirements and reminders to help you prepare for the semester ahead.

Onboarding and I-9 Verification

Our records indicate that your employment start date is August 16. You must complete your onboarding and Section 1 of the Form I-9 before your start date. Then, you need to report to a campus location for physical verification of your documentation for Section 2 of the Form I-9 by Thursday, Aug. 18. Failure to complete these steps will result in your removal from the payroll system until you complete this requirement (i.e., you will stop getting paid). It is possible you have already completed this step and if so, thank you!

You (or your friends) may have questions about your GA appointment. While the Graduate School would like to welcome you to campus with this message, we cannot provide information about your specific appointment since this work is done through Human Resource Services. If you are unsure whether your assistantship paperwork was completed, a great place to start would be with the administrative assistants in the unit/department that is hiring you.

Teaching Assistant Training and Resources

For those of you who have GTA appointments, the Fall 2022 Teaching Assistant Institute begins Monday (tomorrow). I hope you’ll take advantage of the “Birds of a Feather Networking Session” on Thursday, to connect with new and experienced teaching assistants. The Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning (CITL) provides many resources for GTAs on their website and offers a variety of programs on topics related to teaching, inclusive instruction, and instructional technology throughout the semester.

Professional Development

The Graduate School has also partnered with many other groups on campus to offer professional development programming. Make sure you take advantage of the events planned throughout the year!

Have a great fall semester and please do make sure you have completed the necessary steps with your hiring process.
