Tips and tools for student time management success

With a new year comes a fresh start and opportunity to reset current approaches and habits. As you prepare for the new semester to begin and for your first day of class, consider sharing with your students the following tools and tips for time management success.

  • Semester Action Plan – Ask your students the question, “When you reach the end of the semester, what do you want to have accomplished and how do you want to feel?” Students can use this worksheet to identify 3 broad goals and be reminded of their major goals for the semester as they plan their time.
  • Weekly Action Plan – Setting weekly and daily goals helps students stay directed and focused. Students can use this worksheet at the start of each week to help select SMART goals as well as plan specific steps they’ll take to meet each goal.
  • Using Calendars and Planners – This guide shares several types of planning that students can do to manage their time and connects students with resources to help them make the most out of each day.
  • Semester-at-a-Glance Calendar – Students can use this downloadable version of the current semester calendar, in either PDF or editable Word format, to plot their class meetings, assignment due dates, and other major activities.
  • Weekly Planners – In addition to the previously mentioned semester-at-a-glance calendar, students can utilize downloadable and editable weekly planners in 60-minute intervals, 30-minute intervals, or morning/afternoon/evening time blocks for planning their time.
  • Goal Tracker – Successful college students set goals and strive to achieve them. Students can use this worksheet to help them track and evaluate their goals.
