During the 2025–2026 academic year, Northern Illinois University will conduct a comprehensive review of three enterprise online learning tools currently integrated with Blackboard: Yellowdig, VoiceThread, and Respondus. All three contracts are set to expire in summer 2026. The Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning (CITL) has convened a working group to evaluate how these tools are used, their impact on teaching and learning, and their overall value to the university community.
Why This Review Matters
This review ensures NIU continues investing in tools that meaningfully support teaching, learning, community, and academic integrity—while using university resources effectively. The goal is to make evidence-based recommendations on whether to renew, replace, or retire each tool.
Tools Under Review
- Yellowdig: A social, community-based discussion platform designed to foster authentic interaction, ongoing conversation, and a sense of belonging.
- VoiceThread: A multimedia presentation tool that enables audio, video, and text commentary around slides to support asynchronous discussion.
- Respondus LockDown Browser & Monitor: Assessment security tools that lock down the testing environment and support academic integrity during online exams.
What the Review Will Examine
The working group will gather data and feedback to understand:
- Usage and outcomes: How often and how effectively each tool is used across courses and departments.
- Teaching and learning impact: Faculty and student experiences with engagement, accessibility, and learning outcomes.
- Cost and sustainability: Total cost of ownership, accessibility and privacy compliance, and vendor reliability.
- Alternatives: Whether other tools could meet the same needs more effectively or affordably.
Timeline
- Fall 2025: Launch review, collect data, and host feedback opportunities.
- Winter 2025–Spring 2026: Analyze findings, consult with campus stakeholders, and explore alternatives if needed.
- Late Spring-Summer 2026: Finalize recommendations and, if changes are approved, begin transition and training plans.
How Faculty and Staff Can Participate
- Share your experience: Tell CITL how you use Yellowdig, VoiceThread, or Respondus and how they impact student learning and engagement.
- Flag dependencies: Let us know if these tools are critical to your course design or assessment strategy.
- Stay flexible: If recommendations lead to changes, CITL will provide guidance and support to help you adapt.
Watch for upcoming surveys, info sessions, and focus groups throughout the year where you can share feedback, ask questions, and preview possible alternatives.
