At NIU, we know that student success extends far beyond the classroom, and for our online Huskies, connection and well-being are central to thriving in a digital learning environment. That’s why the Office of Online Learning is proud to introduce Wellness Wednesdays, a new initiative designed to support the mental health and well-being of NIU’s online students.
Two Wednesdays a month, students receive a brief, encouraging email with practical wellness resources and tools they can use right away to build resilience, manage stress, and stay connected. The goal is simple but powerful—to normalize mental health conversations, reduce stigma, and embed well-being into the rhythm of online student life.

Why Wellness Wednesday Matters
Online students navigate unique pressures, including academic demands layered with work, family, and personal responsibilities. In addition, the isolation of asynchronous coursework can amplify feelings of disconnection. Wellness Wednesdays responds directly to these challenges by offering consistent, compassionate touch points that remind students they aren’t alone.
Through this initiative, we aim to:
- Normalize mental health conversations: Regular messages featuring approachable, empathetic language help students view mental wellness as an essential part of academic life, not an afterthought.
- Address persistent challenges: Topics such as burnout, financial stress, and self-doubt are paired with actionable strategies and evidence-based guidance designed for online learners.
- Promote access to care: Each communication spotlights NIU’s mental health resources along with external tools to help students connect with support when they need it most.

“Our office wants to continue to build a community of care. By making wellness and self-care an ongoing conversation, we’re helping students sustain momentum, balance, and confidence throughout their learning journey here at NIU and beyond.” (Tedra Mewhirter, Assistant Director of Online Student Success)

How Faculty and Staff Can Engage
Faculty and administrators play an essential role in reinforcing NIU’s culture of care. If you teach in a fully online program, you can help by:
- mentioning Wellness Wednesdays in your classes or advising sessions,
- encouraging students to read and engage with weekly content, and
- sharing relevant insights or resources with the Online Learning team for future features.
Together, we can ensure that NIU’s online students feel supported, seen, and connected because wellness and learning truly go hand in hand!
